Announcing the Pursuit of Human Well-Being

cover

This book is a three year landmark project of Halloran Philanthropies which tells the impressive story of the journey of human wellbeing throughout the world primarily from 1980 to 2014.

The most amazing finding is that in every country in the world there were significant improvements in health, education and income. By far the biggest achievement for humanity is that extreme poverty was cut in half over the last 25 years.

In a world beset with social, political and economic problems, it is easy to focus on the negative aspects of global development. Such a perspective tends to report the bad news about people and societies and fails to capture the positive developments that have reshaped our world. Rarely are the “good news” stories reported. The Book documents significant gains in 188 countries in human wellbeing which include:

  • Increased life expectancy
  • Major declines in infant, maternal and child mortality
  • Nearly universal literacy
  • Dramatic reduction in violence
  • Improvements in sanitation
  • Innovations in public health
  • Dramatic expansion of education
  • Expanded political freedom and civil liberties
